2. The bikini was named after the island Bikini Atoll, where the US military initiated its first peace time nuclear weapons test. Its creator, Louis Réard, believed that the revealing suit would create a shock like that of the atomic bomb.

10. The thong was first made in New York by order of mayor Fiorello Henry La Guardia. The mayor felt outraged when he saw that dancers performed without underwear and ordered to sew tiny panties for them to cover their modesty.
